In the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, an unprecedented mega project

is reshaping the boundaries of time and space. With the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link officially open to traffic on June 30th, VR Guangdong, a flagship program of the Southern Finance Omnimedia Corp. International Communication Centre, the Greater Bay Area Metaverse International Communication Lab (GBA MIC Lab) and the 21st Century Business Herald, launched A Marvel of Infrastructure in GBA Setting Multiple World Records! Immersive Tour Around Megaproject “Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link”, a special 4K VR 360°panoramic video. Now let’s embark on an immersive tour around Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link and explore the brand-new infrastructure wonder in China at close quarters.

The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link consists of two bridges, two artificial islands and a two-way eight-lane sea tunnel, making it one of the world’s most challenging cross-sea cluster projects. The 24-kilometer link is expected to cut the travel time between the two cities from the current two hours to about 30 minutes.

Let’s start off from the east artificial island. Covering a land area of approximately 34,000 square meters, the island is the world’s first underwater highway interchange, which connects with the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Tunnel and integrates smoothly with road networks like the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Riverside Expressway.

Driving west from the main line of the eastern artificial island leads into the 6,845-meter-long tunnel. The undersea tunnel consists of 32 immersed tubes and a final joint. It is the world’s first two-way eight-lane steel-mixed pipe tunnel and the world’s longest concrete pipe tunnel. Besides, the tunnel is outfitted with 14 intelligent inspection robots, dual-wavelength flame detectors, Beidou satellite signal simulators and many other intelligent devices to ensure safe and efficient travel.

The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link spans three major sea-lanes in the Lingdingyang estuary. The link is an S-shaped route that takes multiple factors into account, such as hydrogeology, flood control and altitude restrictions, resulting in a safer and more comfortable driving experience for commuters and tourists alike. That explains why the project adopts the bridge-tunnel combination in its construction. Speaking of which, the west artificial island leaping before our eyes serves as the key pivot that connects the tunnel and the bridges.

Leaving the west artificial island, we enter the Lingdingyang Bridge. Spanning 1,666 meters, it is the world’s largest offshore steel box girder suspension bridge, with a lifting height (from the bridge deck to the sea) of 91 meters, which is equivalent to a 30-floor building, and can accommodate ships carrying up to 30,000 containers.

Just as the Golden Gate Bridge to the San Francisco Bay Area, the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is becoming a new landmark of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. With the link officially open to traffic, bridges across the Pearl River will knit together different cities within the GBA even more tightly. The vision of developing a vibrant and internationally competitive first-class bay area and world-class city cluster, is now one huge step closer to reality.
