Italian Auteur Takes the American Psycho

Three tickets to American Psycho, please. Lionsgate announced that Queer director Luca Guadagnino is adapting a new film based on Bret Easton Ellis’s novel American Psycho — not a remake of the 2000 movie. But also, like, it’s still about Patrick Bateman, so it will be very hard not to see it as a remake. According to Deadline, Scott Z. Burns is writing the script, and Sam Pressman will produce the movie— Pressman’s father, Edward R. Pressman, produced the original film. For those who haven’t had the pleasure of having the plot of American Psycho explained to them on a bad date, Patrick Bateman (played Christian Bale in the movie) is an investment banker who doubles as a serial killer. “We are thrilled to add another elite filmmaker to our upcoming slate,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson in a statement. “Luca is a brilliant artist, and the perfect visionary to create a whole new interpretation of this potent and classic IP.” Guadagnino’s filmography includes Challengers, Bones and All, and Call Me By Your Name — Will his version of American Psycho find a way to reinvent the axe?
