Kendrick Lamar posted another song snippet to social media today, leading to another round of fans wondering when he was going to drop the damn album. Turns out the answer is right now. Lamar surprise-released GNX, a victory lap to cap off his biggest year yet. Surprisingly, Lamar’s hit “Not Like Us,” and all his other Drake disses, are nowhere on the track list — this is a collection of 12 new songs. But Lamar did reclaim the title “heart pt. 6” after Drake previously used the name for his final diss. It doesn’t sound like Taylor Swift is on the album — contrary to DJ Snake’s recent claim — but GNX is executive-produced by Swift’s right-hand man Jack Antonoff, who previously did Lamar’s “6:16 in L.A.” (If it’s any consolation, there are multiple SZA features on the album.)
Lamar has been teasing new music for months — and not just for the purpose of attacking Drake. He teased a song fans were calling “Broccoli” or “Reincarnated” at the beginning of the “Not Like Us” video in July. Then, in September, he posted a song called “Watch the Party Die” on Instagram. But now, he just got a whole lot more material for his upcoming Super Bowl halftime show. He still better close with “Not Like Us,” though.
