Ever since Brittany Cartwright first filed for divorce from Jax Taylor in August, things have hardly been smooth sailing. But when it comes to the more contentious parts of the separation — custody arrangements, dividing up their shared property and the rights to Mamaw’s Beer Cheese — you’d think the two reality stars would opt to leave it to the lawyers. Not so for Taylor, apparently. Per People, The Valley castmate submitted a handwritten response to his estranged wife’s petition to divorce without enlisting any legal help. As a result, the 45-year-old reportedly made several errors in the paperwork, including indicating that he and Cartwright had never been legally married. Whoopsies!
“We are legally married,” Cartwright commented on an E! News Instagram post about the matter on Thursday. “I’m guessing paperwork is hard for some people. 🫣.” Lance Bass, the couple’s officiant at their 2019 Kentucky castle wedding, also chimed in: “I can confirm this. Pastor Lance signed the papers. 🤷🏼♂️.”
According to E! News, which also obtained a copy of the filing, Taylor checked a box confirming that he and Cartwright are married, only to check a second box reading, “Respondent contends that the parties never legally married or registered in a domestic partnership.” He then listed the estranged couple’s date of separation as September 26 — eight months after the January 24 date Cartwright listed in her own filing (Cartwright announced their separation in February). Taylor also granted Cartwright sole physical and legal custody of their 3-year-old son, Cruz, leaving a box requesting child-visitation time unchecked. Under the child-support section, he then checked a box labeled “Other,” creating confusion around the arrangement.
When reached for comment by People on Wednesday, Taylor’s rep maintained that the filing mistakes are already being addressed. “Jax and Brittany have already long resolved all matters related to custody of Cruz, and will continue to work together privately for the best interest of their son, which remains their overriding concern,” a spokesperson wrote in a statement to the outlet. “While Jax made errors in filling out forms that are usually done by trained legal professionals, those errors will be amended without delay.”
Suffice to say, Jax Taylor is not the No. 1 lawyer in the group.
