On Thursday, Kim Kardashian’s loungewear brand Skims announced a collaboration with Dolce & Gabbana. And you might ask yourself: Wait, aren’t we supposed to be boycotting D&G? Not Ms. Kimmy K. Just to jog your memory, this is the brand founded by Italian fashion designers Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce that has a long history of racism and homophobia — and has been unapologetic about it. (If you forgot, let us remind you of the founders’ questionable decisions that seemed to represent questionable personal values.) And it’s not even the first time Kardashian has designed clothes with the brand; she helped design the spring-summer 2023 collection that debuted in Milan.
The campaign imagery, shot by Nadia Lee Cohen, is supposed to invoke a vintage feel as a nod to old Italian roots. Still, I can assure you my Sicilian great-grandparents’ faces looked nowhere near as smooth and shiny as the Kardashians’ (Kim included her sister Kourtney in one shot, despite the drama they started about the brand at the latter’s wedding) do in these stills. That petty point aside, for someone who’s been quiet about the election results, she’s been very active online about Skims. The timing is … something.
