Thai companies in film, animation, and BL content industries excelled at the Cannes Film Festival by securing major deals worth over US$39 million.

The Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) supported these companies, leading to successful business matching activities at the prestigious Marché du Film 2024, part of the Cannes Film Festival.

This market, known as the oldest and largest of its kind, attracted numerous global film industry professionals. The DITP’s efforts aimed to boost trade opportunities and raise international market recognition. Throughout the nine-day event from May 14 to 22, 2024, a total of 343 business matching sessions were held, resulting in a trade value exceeding US$39 million.

Mr. Phusit Ratanakul Sereroengrit, Director-General of DITP, expressed pride in the achievements of the 12 Thai companies and the Thai Association of Boys Love Content under the Thailand Pavilion. Aligned with the policy of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai, this initiative seeks to enhance national revenue and elevate Thailand’s soft power globally.

Thai BL content attracted significant interest from markets across Asia, Europe, North America, and South America due to economic recovery and growing acceptance of gender diversity. Thai companies have expanded BL content production, with over 200 titles created in the past decade. Additionally, Thai drama and horror genres maintain strong commercial appeal, with notable interest in international licensing.

Thailand’s reputation as a prime filming location is on the rise, thanks to government incentives for international productions. Business negotiations at this year’s Marché du Film involved investors, producers, and buyers from various countries, leading to the successful completion of 343 business matching sessions and a trade value exceeding US$39 million.

Key negotiations such as M Pictures Co., Ltd. setting foot in U.S. cinemas with “Tee Yod 2” or “Death Whisperer 2,” while also securing distribution and broadcasting rights in Russia. Hollywood (Thailand) Co., Ltd.’s BL series attracted interest from an Italian partner, and Benetone Films Co., Ltd. engaged with companies from the Netherlands, UK, Canada, and the USA for upcoming foreign productions in Thailand.

This year’s Marché du Film welcomed over 15,000 participants from 140 countries, showcasing Thailand’s excellence in diverse content production, filming locations, and post-production services among representatives from 60+ countries and 300+ exhibiting companies.
