Meet the singing trans Mexican-cartel leader taking over awards season. That’d be Emilia Pérez, the titular star of Jacques Audiard’s upcoming musical movie. The film’s trailer introduces us to Karla Sofía Gascón as Pérez, who’s looking to escape her past with help from Zoe Saldana’s Rita, a lawyer. Then, in the next two minutes, said trailer shows everything you could want from a buzzy fall film: guns, dance numbers, Selena Gomez on a dramatic phone call. In the words of Emilia herself: Bingo! The film hits theaters on November 1 and Netflix on November 13, following a hot festival-season showing where Gascón, Saldana, Gomez, and Adriana Paz shared the Best Actress trophy at Cannes. Could they sing and dance their way to a quartet of Oscar nods next?
