In September, X (formerly Twitter) saw its traffic drop from 6.4 billion to 5.8 billion, marking a 10% decrease, according to new data from SimilarWeb.
As per the latest figures, X has now fallen to seventh place in the global rankings, lagging behind Instagram.
When analyzing the data, it becomes evident that out of the 176 countries that accessed Twitter in September, 83% witnessed a decline in month-on-month visits to the site.
Further insights from Google data indicate that global searches for Twitter have been on the decline since Elon Musk’s takeover in September 2022, dropping from 14 million monthly searches to 11 million a year later, the lowest point since November 2018.
A spokesperson at Venture Smarter provided comments on the findings:
“SimilarWeb’s traffic data clearly shows that Twitter is experiencing a rapid decline in traffic and has already slipped in global rankings. Since Musk took over, it appears that the platform’s popularity is waning. The significant drop in traffic from numerous countries could be attributed to Twitter’s efforts to combat bots behind the scenes. However, as Musk recently mentioned, the $1 charge may be the ‘only way to fight bots,’ making it more likely that users are disengaging from the platform.”
